Chicken, Chicken, Duck!
by Nadia Krilanovich
Now we’ve all heard that we’re really not supposed to judge a book by its cover. Well, we do it anyway, don't we? The cover of this book is deceivingly simple. Don't get us wrong -- you'll find that the content IS presented simply, but once we gave it more than a glance we can report that this is a beautiful book from cover to cover. The illustrations are actually quite detailed against the white backgrounds, and all the critters (throw a llama, cat, and pig into the mix) look delightfully friendly. You’ll find all the usual barnyard animals introduced with accompanying noises and brought together at the end to form a happy pyramid of farm fluff and feathers.
With so few words (basically just the names of the animals and their sounds), the book is laid out ingeniously as a poem to read with very small children. There's a reason for the exclamation point in the title of this book: it's ridiculously peppy! We're not ashamed to say we were quacking along with this one.
