This is a timeless story, reassuring us that no matter what happens, there will always be room on Mother’s lap. In the story, which takes place on a cold, quiet, shadowy afternoon among the Inuit people, little Michael’s mom always has room for him AND his favorite things—Boat, Dolly and Puppy. But when Michael’s baby sister wakes up from her nap, she wants to be held, too. Both the reader and Michael wonder how there will be room for everyone and everything on Mother’s lap. Somehow we know she’ll find a way.

This lovely book is expressive in both words and illustrations, which are done in rich earthy colors. It is a perfect book for a new big brother or sister—briefly insecure and unhappy about sharing his mom with his new baby sister, Michael learns that there is really nothing to worry about. There is always room on Mother’s lap.
