When Did I Get Like This?
by Amy Wilson
If there is one event that can cause an intelligent, confident, capable woman to feel as if she is falling apart at the seams, it is becoming a mother. Happily though, this charming memoir reminds us that our unrealistic expectations for ourselves and our attempts to live up to what are oftentimes ridiculous standards can, in retrospect, be hilarious. Her honesty and openness will make you feel as if you're having a much needed, commiserating night out with your best girlfriend. (It should be noted that such candor includes some profanity.)
The author hits perfectly on many of the most absurd standards and true challenges of modern motherhood: the fertility clinic, pregnancy pains, birth plan, breastfeeding stigmas, sibling rivalries, sleeping (or rather, not sleeping) nightmares, and of course, preschool “interviews.” For frazzled or overwhelmed moms everywhere, the “perfect” decision is to read, relax, and laugh with this reassuring memoir.
