A Child’s Garden: 60 Ideas to Make Any Garden Come Alive for Children

by Molly Dannenmaier

I love this book. It is a feast for the eyes, nourishment for the soul, and a vitally important contribution for parents and caregivers. Its message is simple. Children need gardens where they can run, play, splash in water, get dirty, imagine, grow things, and learn about all the green and growing life around them. Period. Our manicured yards and prefabricated playgrounds are not wild enough, nor do they bring our children in direct contact with the natural world, a connection our growing children need for true health and well-being. And yet so many adults want ordered, beautiful, harmonious garden spaces and are not willing to create intentional places for children in their plans.

Molly Dannenmaier has a family, and she has also worked for years with garden design and landscaping. She knows that with a little inspiration, practical know-how, and a touch of magic thrown in, a house and garden can be a delight for both adults and children. There are so many great ideas in this book. The photographs are stunning, as are the gardens featured here. Some readers may feel that only wealthy families can achieve such projects and works of art, but public gardens are included as well, with wonderful ideas and inspirations. This book is not only beautiful—it is a wise protective contribution for children everywhere.
